Top 5 Common Ford Problems (And when to call Reds Recovery)

Ford is one of the UK’s best selling car brands, and for good reason, they’re built to last, they’re reliable, and relatively cost efficient in both initial cost and running costs. Some of their best selling cars like the Focus, Fiesta and Mondeo are popular favourites for drivers in the UK. However no matter how well built they are, they’re not bullet proof and are still susceptible to the same issues that any other car can suffer from.

At Reds Recovery, we’ve been called out to deal with all kinds of breakdowns, and Ford models are no exception. If you drive one, here are 5 common Ford problems we see all the time, plus tips on what to watch out for and when it’s time to call us.

1. PowerShift Transmission Issues.

Fords PowerShift transmission has a good reputation of being smooth when it works however it is equally irreputable for the problems it can encounter, especially in the Fiesta and Focus models. Some drivers report jerky gear changes, hesitation and even total transmission failure.

Watch for:

  • Juddering or slipping gears
  • Delayed acceleration
  • Transmission warning lights

This is one of the more serious common Ford problems and often requires a replacement clutch pack or full transmission rebuild. If your car suddenly loses power or won’t change gear, we can recover you safely.

2. EcoBoost Engine Overheating (1.0L)

The 1.0L EcoBoost engine found in most Fiestas and Focuses is efficient, but many early versions had a known fault with the coolant pipe which if it splits or fails can lead to rapid overheating and ultimately major engine failure.

Symptoms include:

  • Rising temperature gauge
  • Steam from under the bonnet
  • Engine warning light

If you notice these signs, pull over immediately and call Reds Recovery. Continuing to drive could lead to a blown head gasket or warped engine block.

3. Electrical Issues

Ford models, especially those packed with tech like the Kuga. Galaxy, and puma can suffer from annoying electrical faults. This can range from minor glitches to major electrical faults that can malfunction and shut down your whole car system.

Common signs:

  • Dashboard lights flickering or staying on
  • Keyless entry or push-start issues
  • Radio, screen, or sensors cutting out

Many of these issues trace back to faulty Body Control Modules or battery drain. We can recover your vehicle and get a fast diagnosis at a trusted garage.

4. Suspension Wear

With the UK’s pothole-ridden roads, it’s no surprise that worn suspension is one of the most common Ford problems we deal with. Models like the Mondeo, Focus, and Transit are especially prone to worn springs, drop links, or bushings.

Look out for:

  • Knocking noises over bumps
  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Loose or vague steering

Suspension faults can make your car unsafe to drive. If you hear anything suspicious or the ride suddenly feels off, don’t risk it, call us.

5. DPF Blockage In Diesel Fords

If you drive a diesel Ford those such as a Transit or Kuga, those in the last 15 years are most likely to have a diesel particle filter or DPF a device in diesel vehicles that captures and stores soot from exhaust gases, reducing emissions and improving air quality. However the DPF can become clogged, especially if you mostly do short trips. A blocked DPF will cause reduced performance and can leave you stranded.

Signs include:

  • Loss of power
  • DPF warning light
  • Increased fuel consumption

If a regeneration fails, the DPF may need specialist cleaning or replacing. We can transport your vehicle to a garage that handles it quickly and correctly.
