If you’ve been driving around Kent for a while, you already know some roads just have bad luck. They look fine until the traffic piles up or the weather turns. Then suddenly you’re sat on the hard shoulder wondering how your day went sideways.

1. The M2
If you drive the M2 a lot, you’ve probably seen a few hazards. It’s one of the busiest motorways around here. Junction 3 up through to 5 is always chaos. The lane merges, trucks everywhere, drivers slamming on the brakes for no reason.
When your car starts acting funny on the M2, don’t try to push your luck.
What to do:
Pull over if you can, get to the hard shoulder, hazards on. Turn your wheels toward the grass, get out from the left side, and wait behind the barrier. Don’t stand near the lane.

2. The A2
Everyone hates this one. It’s busy, always seems to have something going on, and the slip roads are way too short. Around Gravesend and Cobham, things get messy quick. One minute it’s clear, the next you’re stuck behind a lorry doing 30 and someone’s flying up behind you.
If you break down there, stay calm.
Do this:
Try to reach a lay-by or side road if you can. If you can’t, keep hazards on and stay in the car with your seatbelt on. Don’t get out and walk along the verge, it’s not worth the risk.

3. The A249
Now this one catches people out all the time. The hill near Detling and the Stockbury roundabout are both rough. Tight bends, poor lighting, and people flying around corners like they’re on a racetrack.

If you’re driving there and something feels off, move left early. Don’t wait until it dies on you. Hazards on, lights if it’s foggy, and give us a ring. We’ll find you.
4. The A20
The A20 is sneaky. It looks harmless until you’re halfway between Maidstone and Ashford and realise there’s nowhere to stop. Long dark bits, narrow lanes, and not much room for error.
We’ve had late-night calls out near Lenham, where it’s pitch black and drivers can’t even see the verge.

5. The A21
This road is a bit of everything. Straight bits, single lanes, sudden turns. It lures people in, then surprises them with a bend or hill they didn’t expect. Between Sevenoaks and Tonbridge is where most people get caught out.
If your car conks out there, keep calm. Pull off safely if you can. If not, stay put with hazards and belt on. Don’t start walking up the road, cars come out of nowhere on that stretch.
